Wedding Stationery tips for your Wedding Day

Wedding Day Stationery tips and advice

This is tips and advice for wedding stationery and by that I mean wedding stationery used on the day of your wedding.  So this isn’t about wedding invitations ( <but that article is).  If you’re tight on budget remember the main thing about wedding stationery is that it performs a function.  If you can find an alternative that costs less or is free as long as it performs the job you need that’s all right.  Wedding stationery can make a great contribution to the look and styling of a wedding but that’s a bonus. Albeit a very good one!

If you would like to see more of my stationery visit the main website at for bespoke wedding invitations and stationery. Alternatively carry on looking around our wedding stationery blog.

Tips from a bespoke wedding stationery maker:

  • Seating plans escort cards or seating charts.  If you’re having a meal with set seating you need some way to get guests to show guests where to head.  100 people wandering around a banquet hall staring at each place name might be a bit chaotic.
  • Don’t produce a table plan or seating chart too early.  Especially with larger weddings adjustments may be needed as guests drop out and replacements come in.

  • For really large weddings escort cards over seating charts or table plans have the advantage that changes can be made right up until the last minute.
  • If making yourself aim to finish your stationery a week or so in advance.  This gives time for any mistakes to be corrected and to enjoy the week before your wedding.
  • Similarly if buying your wedding stationery leave yourself time as deliveries are easily missed or damaged in transit.  Things happen that aren’t anyone’s fault.
  • Orders of Service must be checked by the person conducting the service to check there is no copyright infringement.  You may not be able to print hymns or readings without permission.

  • Getting place names that have guest names printed can be a great bonus.  Our place names include name printing as standard.  But we do recommend getting a couple of blanks to cover the unexpected!  Why get them printed:
    • They can take a long time to do
    • Not everyone has really neat handwriting
    • You don’t need to worry about mistakes
    • Maintains a consistent and high quality look
    • Then again you could just hire a calligrapher like my friend Claire

  • If you think the table name holders are a bit unsightly and spoil the look of your centre pieces look for table name/number tents which offer a lower profile alternative in identifying your tables.
  • If you’re having a civil ceremony although you don’t need an order of service you could have a program giving details of the day and ceremony.
  • If you’re having a religious service with an Order of Service you can include a program for the day in with this.
  • If guests have a choice on the day providing menus can be useful!

  • If the meal had choices chosen in advance menus to remind people what the food was and a way to show guests what they chose is also a good idea.  You could put this on the back of the place names using a code like M: Ch meaning Main: Chicken.
Wedding Sign
Wedding Sign
  • If getting married in a large venue a welcome sign identifying where your wedding is can be helpful.  Especially for guests who don’t know too many other guests and might join the wrong event by mistake.
  • Favour tags can be a cute touch but don’t need to be seen as one of the more essential items.
  • Sweet and dessert tables can benefit from labels or tags to identify what’s on offer.  A lot of time this may be obvious but not always.  Allergy and diet advice could also be given.
  • Hard to find venues can benefit from signs reassuring guests they’re going the right way.  Take them down at the end of the day to avoid trouble with the local council.

Bespoke stationery and the Alice #ATeamAIW

This week saw something Frabjous happen that included this bespoke stationery maker.  Some of you reading this might think I’m stealing one of Zarn’s from Alice in Weddinglands favourite words.  I think in this case it’s use is allowable as the utterly frabjous event I want to talk about was the release of the inaugural issue of the Alice online wedding magazine.  This is indeed made by the Alice in Weddingland team.  This features the #ATeamAIW – I think standing for Alice In Weddingland A Team.  It’s a select group of wedding suppliers and professionals who like the original are for hire but unlike them are not a band of elite former soldiers on the run from the US Government for a crime they didn’t commit.  They are all experts in their fields and can be found on Alice giving expert Wedding advice.

Alice in Wedding Land

For anyone who doesn’t know Alice in Weddingland is probably the UK’s and maybe the worlds leading blog if you’re looking for something that little bit different or little bit unique.  The type of things your likely to find on this blog include some of the worlds most unique venues like a restaurant high up in the trees in New Zealand.  Some of the most amazing photographers that ply their trade in weddings.  Take a look at this example of one of the photography polls http://www.aliceinweddingland.co.uk/winning-wedding-photos-week-2/.  The are also some of the more imaginative bridal designers from around the world featured.  It’s a haven of individuality and the unique.

Alice the Magazine carries on in the same theme but is a monthly  free to read publication.  The cover feature talks about the best steampunk wedding ever which you can see on this link here: http://www.aliceinweddingland.co.uk/alice/the-worlds-best-steampunk-wedding/ .  I am amazed by the photography in it but I’m not sure it displaces my favourite steam punk wedding which I saw strangely enough on the blog.

French Made desert tables
French Made dessert tables

One of my favourite articles is by Lauren Delpech of French Made.  French Made is a Dessert table company.  Not surprisingly the article talks about the joys of a Dessert table.  These can look fairly stunning at a wedding as well as offering huge choice and being a real joy if you have a sweet tooth (I do which is why I love this!).  I’ve seen a lot of them on US blogs and they can be everything from giant selections of pies or baked goods.  To milkshake shots, mini cheesecakes and all manner of wonderous things.   http://www.aliceinweddingland.co.uk/alice/hand-made-delicacies-on-your-wedding-table/

Our Pinterest Wedding Yum Board has a lot of images of dessert tables on and can be seen here.  http://pinterest.com/artmsstationery/wedding-yum/  I particularly like the sound of the Smore’s bar.

Gail Jones of Glass Oyster takes the magazine readers through an expert look at Floral Crowns one of the summers trends.  She takes a detailed look at all the different ways this can be done and made to suit a wide variety of brides.  Glass Oyster designs and sells bridal headdresses so is a real expert in this field.

I think I’m going to save the best for last.  Leaving the A Team aside although please remember if you have a wedding problem, if no other supplier can help, and if you can find them, maybe you can hire the A Team.  Although not strictly true as you could ask the A Team first, that also works!  You don’t have to hire all of them at once and we have websites so are quite easy to find via the interweb.   If you’re not sure why this isn’t funny check out the A Team tv series intro on Youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_MVonyVSQoM

But the best is not a link to Youtube however amazing Youtube is!  It’s Zarn’s write up of a styled shoot.  I don’t often see many shoots with this many people in or quite so much attention to detail or owls!

The themed shoot Zarn I think aptly describes as a Fairy Wedding Spectaculr.  Now admittedly I’m not expecting an outbreak of Tolkien-esque or fairy weddings but there are all mannor of details and touches to spot and draw inspiration from.  You can visit the article here:  http://www.aliceinweddingland.co.uk/alice/a-fairy-wedding-spectacular/

Wedding Planning Tips from SWY Weddings

Wedding planning tips by Sam of SWY Weddings

Today I’m very privileged to be able to share some advice by top wedding planner Sam of Samantha Whitehead-Young Wedding Design.   Sam has very kindly worked out her tips for planning your wedding, which are helpful whether you are making use of a wedding planner or not.

Sam is a brilliant and passionate wedding professional.  It’s well worth checking out her website.  I first came in contact with Sam after reading her blog post on Spanish weddings and she was nice enough to tweet to a very small & new wedding stationery supplier.  There’s a lot of helpful advice and inspiration on her blog including a competition to win wedding planning services which runs till the end of May 2013.  See the competition here.

As well as being a well-established and respected wedding planner Sam is also one of the wedding industries top tweeters (currently holding position 6 at the top of writing on UKWed).  So well worth a follow if you are planning a wedding and on twitter.

That’s probably more than enough waffle from me….

Top Ten Wedding Planning Tips

Set your budget and stick to it.  Knowing your budget from the start will allow you to refine your wedding searches to the money you have – narrowing down the vast possibilities prevents you from falling in love with something that is way out of your league.

Start Early

“The early bird catches the worm” is a phrase that could have been made for planning your wedding.  Fabulous, reputable wedding venues/suppliers are booked up well in advance and although a wedding can be planned in any space of time, it is advantageous to start as early as you can to ensure that you can have your “dream team”.

You can most certainly be organised without crossing into the scary domain of the “Bridezilla” territory.  Organisation is key to a stress free wedding planning process. Hire a wedding planner or purchase wedding planning assistance in the form of online software or a wedding planner.  Create your timeline and stick to it.

There is and always will be only one of you, allowing people to help you with your wedding plans can ease the stress.  Give helping hands a clearly defined role/job that plays to their strengths.

Know your Suppliers

There are many wedding suppliers out there and you only get one wedding day.  Research your chosen suppliers, ask for references and see their work!!  This ground work will ensure that you have a team of reputable, reliable suppliers that are all as passionate about your wedding day as you are.

Get it in Writing

Once you have found your venue/suppliers get everything in writing.  You should always have a contract between yourself and each supplier that you are working with.  Communicate clearly with all your suppliers everything that you require from them and ensure that you receive an acknowledgement of them understanding their role.  Keep in touch during the lead up to your wedding and finalise all details with them one/two weeks before the wedding

Compromise can save lots of unnecessary stress.  Yes, this is your day and indeed you should do what makes you happy, however, having an awareness of the feelings of those close to you and listening to suggestions is not going to be the end of you.  You will not agree with all of them, but you can advise them calmly and discuss it where that this is the case.

Take Out Wedding Insurance

It’s not terribly expensive and very much worth it!  Just like any other form of insurance cover you may have there are many different packages available so you can ensure that you get the right cover for you.

Keep your sense of humour!!  If you can laugh at things, all things good or bad, then your memories of planning your wedding and the day itself will only consist of fabulousness!!

Enjoy Your Day

Always remember why you are getting married and don’t bankrupt yourself or have arguments over seating plans etc…  This is the day you will pledge your love to the man or woman that you want to spend the rest of your life with! Nothing else comes close….

Dream Wedding Directory

Dream Wedding Directory

For anyone who reads this blog and hasn’t heard of the website called the Dream Wedding Directory I’d like to introduce what I think is a great resource.  There are a tonne of directories out there most of them charging an arm and a leg to be on and due to the that of little worth, some I don’t even feel understand the industry that well.  So I would understand anyone who has gotten jaded of yet another directory site as I wouldn’t blame you.

So what makes Dream wedding directory different.  I think one of the big differences is it is predominantly for suppliers blogs rather than for suppliers websites.  Supplier’s blogs are a great way of finding out more about a supplier, how they work the results they achieve but you also find a lot of advice and tips from inside the suppliers sector.  These include useful tips, to styling advice and their guesses on the coming trends.  Dream Wedding Directory splits the blogs it lists into their relevant categories making it easy to garner information from the area you’re interested in at that time and each blog listing page also features excerpts from recent articles on that blog.

Unlike many other directories this is a free directory.  A supplier submits it for free and if it is credible it will be added.  This means it’s far more likely to be the best source of information than anything where a payment is necessary.  There are so many directories out there I think registering on all who would have them would bankrupt many businesses.  A word from the creator of Dream Wedding Directory:

My name is Lindsay and along with a good deal of help from my husband, Derek, I have created the Dream Wedding Directory website as a valuable resource for anyone planning a wedding within the United Kingdom.

I was inspired when I discovered that many small businesses that provide wedding services or products struggle to get quality promotion on the Internet.  I have always been passionate about web design, having started my own personal website back in 2001, since then I have also launched several successful directories aimed at cake decorating.

There are many wedding vendors who write wonderful blogs about their services and general wedding advice.

The blogs have been split into nine categories ‘Wedding Cakes’, ‘Wedding Ceremony’, ‘Wedding Fashion’, ‘Wedding Favours’, ‘Wedding Flowers’, ‘Wedding Photography’, ‘Wedding Planning’, ‘Wedding Reception’ and ‘Wedding Stationery’ along with associated tags, to provide visitors with various ways to find the topics they are interested in.

As well as suppliers blogs the traditional wedding blogs can be found in the wedding advice category.  I think it’s a site well worth bookmarking for when you might need it if you’re planning your wedding.  You can visit it by clicking on the button below and as ever if you need a stationery fix (does that ever happen?) check out our main site here: Artemis Stationery
